What Claude Apps actually are
Claude Apps are Claude.ai's Artifacts-based surface for building interactive, AI-powered apps through conversation -- "no coding required." Announced June 25, 2025 as "a dedicated space to view artifacts in the Claude app, and the ability to embed AI capabilities directly into your creations -- transforming artifacts into interactive, AI-powered apps." By that announcement, "millions of users have created over half a billion artifacts -- from productivity tools to educational games."
The AI-powered upgrade
The key shift from a plain artifact to a Claude App: "users of your artifacts can access Claude's intelligence through a text-based API -- answering questions, generating creative content, providing personalized coaching, playing games, solving problems, and adapting responses based on input." An example given directly in Anthropic's own post: rather than asking Claude to generate one set of flashcards for a single topic, you can ask it to build a flashcard app that lets any user pick their own topic and generate their own cards -- "instead of a single-use artifact, you now have an interactive app you can use and share more broadly."
Where the app runs, and who pays for usage
"The app runs on Anthropic's infrastructure, and users authenticate with their Claude account and interact with their own instance of the artifact." Sharing an AI-powered artifact costs the creator nothing extra: "when you share AI-powered artifacts, others can use them immediately -- no API keys required, and no costs to you. Usage counts against each user's own Claude subscription limits, not yours."
Later capability updates (dated, per Anthropic's own changelog notes on the same page)
- October 21, 2025 -- "Artifacts now support MCP and persistent storage." Per the same-era support docs, persistent storage supports up to 20MB per artifact, and MCP integrations let an artifact read from and write to external services (the support tutorial names Asana, Google Calendar, and Slack as examples).
